Sule Skerry – OS Wallpaper Download June2026

This month we visit Sule Skerry, a remote skerry – a small rocky island – set in the North Atlantic off the northern coast of Scotland.

Covering just 16 hectares (40 acres) and located 60 km (37 miles) west of Orkney, Sule Skerry is truly isolated. Its solitary lighthouse, built in 1895, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote manned lighthouse in Great Britain until it was automated in 1982.

The island’s low-lying landscape is composed largely of sandstone and is continually battered by some of the fiercest seas around the British Isles. Despite these harsh conditions, Sule Skerry supports an impressive array of seabird life. It is particularly renowned as a breeding ground for gannets, storm petrels, shags, puffins, and several species of gull.

Adding a touch of folklore to this stark outcrop, Sule Skerry features in the Orkney ballad “The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry.” The song tells the story of a silkie, a creature that can transform from a seal into a human, said to dwell on the island.
