Yes Tor is the second highest point in Dartmoor \u2013 High Willhays a 10-15min walk south of here is 8ft higher.&nbsp; These are the highest points in England south of the Peak District, and the highest in the UK south of the Brecon Beacons.&nbsp; Not all mountain climbers wear crampons!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Searching for the ring: A tethering ring is in the rock just below Yes Tor trig pillar; can you find it? It\u2019s a strange place to tie up an animal!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why \u2018Yes\u2019? There are two theories on the name \u2013 either that it comes from \u2018East Tor\u2019 or \u2018Highest Tor\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fame and misfortune. Yes Tor features on the cover of 1978 album &#8216;Tomato&#8217; from prog rock band Yes. The most captivating views from Yes Tor\u202fare those in front of you, to the north, where the rolling hills of Exmoor melt into one another.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning clockwise, slightly east, much closer to where you are, stands the rocky crest of the Belstone Tors, with the great dome of Cosdon Hill standing behind them above the Taw Valley.&nbsp; This great ridge can be traced from left to right&nbsp; (heading south) where it reaches Hangingstone Hill, with its Army observation post and flagpole on the summit.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, the name \u2018Hangingstone\u2019 is nothing sinister, it comes from the small logan rock (rocking stone) in an outcrop to the north west&nbsp; of the top.&nbsp; Sadly it no longer rocks! <em>Don\u2019t approach the area if a red flag is flying \u2013 the area is within the Army Firing Range<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southwards the North Moor broadens, a dramatic area of countryside, extending into the remote wilderness, capped by the twin heights of Cut Hill and Fur Tor.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue turning towards the west, and south west of where you are (look to the right of High Willhays&#8217; outcrops) the castle-like rampart of Great Links Tor stands beyond the West Okement Valley, while to the right of that, Bodmin Moor stretches away towards North Cornwall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the landscape around <\/strong>Yes Tor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rocks around Yes Tor are mainly granite, and as with the other Tors in the area, typically has as many as 60 species of lichen covering much of the rock surface.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The land here is high moorland.&nbsp; It is one of two high and remote plateaus, separated by the Dart Valley.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These large areas of grasses, heather and blanket bog have a network of streams and mixed valley mires cutting through them (the water that drains off the moorland is the source of many of the major rivers in Devon).&nbsp; This mix provides rich and important habitats for some distinctive wildlife:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upland areas you can see are dominated by dwarf shrubs; heather, bilberry, cross-leaved heath and western gorse, and grasses including purple moor grass and bristle bent grass.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/getoutside39507958bf.blob.core.windows.net\/blobgetoutside39507958bf\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/adobestock_319324250.jpg\" alt=\"Cross-leaved heath plant in flower\" class=\"wp-image-5996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/adobestock_319324250.jpg 850w, https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/adobestock_319324250-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/adobestock_319324250-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cross-leaved heath<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be able to spot some of the animals and insects that make their home here &#8211; the adder and common lizard, red grouse, raven, meadow pipit, and stonechat. In the spring and summer you can hear skylarks singing overhead.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 Keep dogs under control and in sight at all times<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road walking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Take care on narrow country roads without pavements and walk facing oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hills &amp; Slopes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Risk of slips and falls is much greater on steep or uneven terrain, so go steady.
