Run<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can start\/finish at several places along this circular route on the <a href=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/guides\/all-about-the-south-downs-way\/\">South Downs Way<\/a> but my favourite spot has to be Butser Hill as you\u2019ll start by flying down into Queen Elizabeth Country Park, it\u2019s one hell of a descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"660px\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.osmaps.com\/config?id=c5a788fc-4eb1-414c-a748-091da96f8ba2\" title=\"Embedded route\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best things about Queen Elizabeth Country Park is that it\u2019s never the same. These have been here for four years now and I never pass empty handed, especially when I have a flask of coffee back in the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/getoutside39507958bf.blob.core.windows.net\/blobgetoutside39507958bf\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-1-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Butser Hill - Helen's shadow\" class=\"wp-image-12852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-1-edited.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-1-edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-1-edited-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This section of the South Downs Way makes a fantastic run as it\u2019s undulating and fairly dry underfoot which means you can push yourself to run the short uphills and recover on the downs. Away from the chalk of the National Trail, these footpaths are more forgiving on the knees and you\u2019ll barely see a soul, apart from the occasional white-tailed deer. The village of Chalton is small but sweet. It has a quaint church with a beautiful colourful garden in spring and a rustic pub, the Red Lion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/getoutside39507958bf.blob.core.windows.net\/blobgetoutside39507958bf\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-3-edited.jpg\" alt=\"cows Butser Hill run\" class=\"wp-image-12854\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-3-edited.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-3-edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/butser-hill-butser-hill-3-edited-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best things about this route is that the hills, except for Butser, are not massively taxing so you can find your rhythm and switch off. It\u2019s easy to navigate and incredibly varied, both the scenery and the paths themselves. The loop ends with one final challenge, a walk (or run!) up Butser Hill towards your car for a strong cuppa joe and a famous Buriton flapjack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t<section
