From cling film scraps to disposable bottles, these items often end up as litter or break down into microplastics that pollute these precious environments and eco-systems. A plastic free hike is one of the challenges we&#8217;ve set in our <a href=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/guides\/26-challenges-that-will-make-you-a-better-hiker\/\">26 Hiking Challenges<\/a> post, so we thought we&#8217;d offer some advice to help. <br><br>We recently asked our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/getoutside\">Get Outside community on Facebook<\/a> for their advice on avoiding single-use plastics when hiking and we got lots of great feedback. Stainless steel bottles, insulated flasks, and beeswax wraps are stronger, safer, and designed to last for years. They won\u2019t shed microplastics like disposable plastics do, and over time, you\u2019ll save money by avoiding constant replacements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nb-why-you-should-never-reuse-single-use-plastic-bottles\">NB. Why you should never reuse single-use plastic bottles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It might seem eco-friendly to refill a disposable bottle, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordia.ca\/news\/stories\/2025\/09\/09\/the-chronic-risks-from-single-use-plastic-water-bottles-are-dangerously-understudied-new-concordia-research-shows.html\">research shows<\/a> it\u2019s not safe. PET bottles degrade with repeated use, releasing chemicals like antimony and phthalates, especially when exposed to heat or sunlight. They also develop scratches that harbour bacteria, making them hard to clean properly. For a safe, sustainable option, choose a reusable water bottle, stainless steel, BPA-free plastic, or glass, designed for repeated use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-plastic-free-food-ideas-for-hiking\">Plastic-free food ideas for hiking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Packing your own food is the easiest way to cut down on plastic waste. Here are practical, eco-friendly options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hot meals for cold days<\/strong><br><br>Get yourself an insulated food flask that you can eat out of with a spoon or fork. Preheat your flask with boiling water for 5\u201310 minutes before adding food to keep it piping hot for hours. Here are a few ideas for what to take and some of these may come out of a can, which makes them even easier!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Soups &#8211; chunky soups will be most filling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stew\/Chilli\/Bolognaise &#8211;
