Since then its principles have spread across the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-here-are-a-few-tips-to-help-you-leave-no-trace\">Here are a few tips to help you \u2018Leave No Trace&#8217;&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-plan-ahead-and-prepare\">Plan ahead and prepare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrep, prep, prep\u201d is a phrase I say time again, about going outdoors. Though things always change, if we\u2019re prepared, we can deal with those changes and have a much better experience. We can save time, reduce pollution and enhance safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk\/resources\/map-reading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">navigate well<\/a>&nbsp;will help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are there any special regulations or restrictions for the area you\u2019re visiting?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/specialist-forecasts\/mountain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weather forecast<\/a>&nbsp;and plan for emergencies or hazards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to plan your visit at times of low use (who wants to sit in a traffic jam anyway?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repackage food to minimise waste and weight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice good navigation skills to eliminate wandering, creation of excessive ground damage and the need for unnecessary cairns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/NigelV_Footpaths_1.gif\" alt=\"Public footpath\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-considerate-of-others\">Be considerate of others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst it\u2019s fun to scream out from a Mountain Top or play loud music on your iPad, please remember that the outdoors is not just for you. Other people walk\/climb\/cycle etc. too, and nature lives there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Respect other visitors, residents and those working and protect the quality of their experience and livelihoods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be courteous. Yield to others on the path particularly at pinch points such as gates or stiles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take breaks and camp away from paths and other visitors (I wild camp well away from Rights of Way)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let nature&#8217;s sounds prevail. Birdsong is always preferable to loud voices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-respect-farm-animals-and-wildlife\">Respect farm animals and wildlife<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Great Britain we have a huge reliance on farming. The reason that our landscape has evolved is mainly due to livestock and agriculture. However, animals are not toys and working farms are not places for petting livestock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Insects, reptiles, birds and mammals also feel the pressure of human intervention.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them (binoculars are good)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behavior, and exposes them to predators and other dangers (recently a friend lost a cow and calf due to people leaving litter in a field)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect wildlife and your food by storing food and waste securely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control pets at all times, or leave them at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid wildlife during sensitive times such as mating, nesting, raising young, or during winter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/NigelV_Frog.gif\" alt=\"Frog\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-travel-and-camp-on-durable-ground\">Travel and camp on durable ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As humans we put a great deal of pressure on the land. Sheer weight of numbers mean that popular areas become heavily eroded very quickly. The following figures (based on the number of people per sq. km in 2018) speak volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scotland \u2013 70<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Northern Ireland \u2013 138<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wales \u2013 151<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>England \u2013 427<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The UK as an average \u2013 272<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to some of our European neighbours&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spain \u2013 92<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Republic of Ireland \u2013 68<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Norway \u2013 14<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Iceland \u2013 3.4 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/NigelV_Canoe.gif\" alt=\"Canoes\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durable surfaces include established paths and campsites, rock, gravel, sand, dry grasses or snow. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebmc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BMC<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Trust<\/a>&nbsp;have been working to restore some of the most eroded paths in the UK and many long distance paths have been surfaced, but we must remain vigilant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect water courses by camping at least 75 metres from lakes and rivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good campsites are found, not made. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent or the ground is durable enough. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-pristine-areas\">\u200bIn pristine areas&#8230;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and paths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid places where impacts are just beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leave-what-you-find\">Leave what you find<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst it\u2019s very tempting to build cairns, make seats, throw stones and pick flowers, the countryside is a surprisingly delicate place. There are also a great many historical sites which require long term preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preserve the past: examine, but do not touch, cultural or historic structures and artifacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them (and leave dry stone walls alone!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not build structures, camp \u2018furniture\u2019, or dig trenches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Good campsites are found not made.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/NigelV_Dandelion.gif\" alt=\"Dandelion\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dispose-of-waste-properly\">Dispose of waste properly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Will someone please tell me why folk bag up dog muck and leave it on the path?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a few timescales of waste decay (these depend on good soils and plenty of bacteria to help).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paper &#8211; 2-4 weeks<br>Banana skin &#8211; 3-5 weeks<br>Wool hat &#8211; 1 year<br>Cigarette butt &#8211; 2-5 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disposable nappy &#8211; 10-20 years<br>Tin can &#8211; 80-100 years<br>Aluminum can &#8211; 200-400 years<br>Glass Bottle \u2013 1000\u2019s of years (ask the Egyptians)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>As humans, we create many types of waste. We have no right to leave any of them for others or nature to find.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the waste facilities of the area that you\u2019re in. Should you really leave your group waste in remote bins which can\u2019t cope, or take it home?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carry it in, carry it out. Inspect your campsite and rest spots for rubbish or spilled foods. Carry out all rubbish, leftover food, and litter. Dispose of any waste in facilities which can deal with it correctly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In most situations deposit solid human waste in holes dug 15 to 20 cm deep at least 75 metres from water, camp, and paths. Cover and disguise the hole when finished.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some situations it may be appropriate to deposit solid human waste directly into the sea or to smear over bare rock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideally carry out toilet paper and hygiene products and in some situations solid human waste e.g. when there is heavy snow cover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 75 metres away from rivers or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater widely into the undergrowth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way you can make a difference is to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticpatrol.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">join Plastic Patrol<\/a>&nbsp;and help clean up our waterways!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-minimise-the-effects-of-fire\">Minimise the effects of fire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/NigelV_Fire.gif\" alt=\"Nigel tending a fire\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been fires in the <a href=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/nationalparks\/peak-district-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peak District National Park<\/a>&nbsp;on many occasions. One such fire was a large moorland fire near Lads Leap in the Longendale Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under every sod of turf a fire was raging and many volunteers dug, hosed and beat until exhausted, covered in ash and coughing up dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fire had been started by a scourge of convenience \u2013 the disposable BBQ. You only have to go your local park to find black, burned squares on the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has far reaching impacts. Farming today reported recently that the recent fire on Saddleworth Moor not only destroyed miles of countryside, but also stripped a farmers land, burned his livestock and cost thousands in transport and finding new grazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Fire is not to be underestimated. Fire is not a toy. Fire is not a joke.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the outdoors. Use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern or LED lamp for light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires. Always check for restrictions due to dry conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand (no tree stumps!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out fires completely, douse heavily and scatter cool ashes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think of Leave No Trace, imagine people coming into your house or garden.
