Societally, there\u2019s something about\nspending time alone that still strikes fear into many and receives concerned\nlooks as you walk into a restaurant asking for a table for one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me,\nsolo adventures have long been totally normal and the most comfortable option.\nI\u2019ve been fortunate to go on several solo holidays like Norway, Thailand and\neven trekking in the Himalayas \u2013 with just me, myself and I. Maybe I\u2019m just\nrubbish company! Whether you\u2019re a weekend hiker with friends, a Sunday club\ncyclist or half-term wild camper with the family, there\u2019s undeniably a huge\namount of benefit to our mental wellbeing when sharing our outdoor adventures\nwith other people and building a community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/Solo_adventures_wild_camping.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Solo wild camping\">\n        \n        <p>Solo wild camping<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\nthere may be occasions when this holds us back, such as if we can\u2019t find others\nwith the same objectives, desire, or availability to meet our plans. Maybe a\nlack of confidence or fear about the planning, getting lost, or bumping into\nbears (a real possibility) can stop us venturing out alone. Even the most\nsocial adventurer can benefit from going solo now and again, here are some of\nthe positives that you\u2019ll get out of it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become a problem solver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&nbsp;don\u2019t realise what we\u2019re capable of until there\u2019s nobody else to call on. This&nbsp;itself may seem daunting when we\u2019re used to relying on others, but our problems&nbsp;are very unlikely to be life or death. Overcoming them instils a level of&nbsp;self-confidence in our ability and independence that makes our daily lives much&nbsp;less stressful too. Any drama we create is created by ourselves. When you\u2019ve&nbsp;negotiated a pot noodle in a rural Tibetan teahouse with zero English, been&nbsp;chased by wild dogs in Thailand and improvised cutlery with your toothbrush in&nbsp;a tent in Glen Affric, most things back in the UK feel fairly benign by&nbsp;comparison.<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.osmaps.com\/map-of-rannoch-moor-ben-alder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><span class=\"redactor-invisible-space\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/Solo_adventures_Credit_Richard_Ellis.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Solo cycle touring\">\n        \n        <p>Credit: Richard Ellis<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get to know yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Solo\nadventures bring an extra responsibility and level of ownership. In our hectic modern\nlives, conjoined to our devices at birth, getting time alone with our thoughts\ncan be increasingly rare and almost uncomfortable. But in this time, we\ndiscover our strengths, values and what we enjoy (and don\u2019t enjoy) doing. We\nhave the chance to ponder the meaning of life and major life events without\ninterruptions. That also brings a greater sense of achievement and satisfaction\nwhen we complete the adventure, and a boosted confidence in our capabilities. Albeit\nmy singing skills aren\u2019t particularly promising. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Freedom to be spontaneous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually,\nI\u2019m an obsessive planner. When walking down the street in Banff trying to decide\nmy plans for the day, I passed a water sports centre renting out paddleboards,\nsomething I had never tried before. Less than ten minutes later I found myself\ntrying to stay upright on the beautiful turquoise river and having a brilliant time\nand being unapologetically selfish. If I had someone else with me, maybe I wouldn\u2019t\nhave done that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/Solo_adventures_solidarity.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Alex finding peace in the mountains\">\n        \n        <p>Alex finding peace in the mountains<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meet new people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nmay sound counter intuitive but being alone isn\u2019t as lonely as you think.\nPeople tend to be more curious to speak to you and you will look more\napproachable to fellow solo travellers. Even a smile and \u2018hello\u2019 from a passing\nwalker was a big mood-booster in the remotest parts of Scotland, where I could\ncycle for hours without seeing anyone. If people ask you to take a photo at a\ncertain landmark, make sure you ask for one in return! This is such a simple\nicebreaker to conversations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be in the moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\nfondly remember sitting in a cosy restaurant in Northern Norway, reading a book\nand gazing out the window into a snowy street, whilst the couples around me\nwere mostly silent and buried in their mobile phones. Whilst bouncing ideas off\nother people can inspire creativity, being able to choose our own perspectives\nwithout pleasing others is refreshing, and you\u2019ll take in sounds and sights you\nmight have never noticed.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/Solo_adventures_travel.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Alex on a solo trip to Canada&nbsp;\">\n        \n        <p>Alex on a solo trip to Canada <\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set your own budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada I\u2019d heard rave reviews of the Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. It wasn\u2019t cheap, but the experience was firmly on the growing bucket-list. My dusty hiking clothing probably caused offence to the smartly-attired couples sat in the elegant dining room, but I could indulge myself without having to worry about others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this has led you to consider your own solo adventure, you may be wondering where to start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a few key lessons I\u2019ve taken away from solo adventures to help you have your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start small<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Solo\n    adventures don\u2019t have to be epic multi-day outings in the greater ranges.\n    Realistically, some people might only manage a day or a few hours to themselves\n    in the evening because of work, health or family commitments. The book\n    \u2018Microadventures\u2019 by Al Humphreys has lots of practical inspiration for\n    thinking closer to home. If you\u2019re planning a weekend away, consider going\n    somewhere you\u2019re already familiar with or not far away. It\u2019s better to start\n    small and increase confidence rather than having a negative experience that\n    might deter future solo escapades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/Solo_adventures_walking_alone.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Hiking alone\">\n        \n        <p>Hiking alone<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get inspired<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Make your own bucket-list. Write down the things you\u2019ve always dreamt of doing. This is bound to get the imagination flowing and some ideas that have seemed beyond reach could give you a goal to work towards. Perhaps you could backpack in your nearest National Park, tick off some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexstaniforth.com\/climb-the-uk\/climb-the-uk-route\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK cycle classics<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/alexstaniforth.com\/ctuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climb the highest point of your own county<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on your strengths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be Bear Grylls to go on a multi-day hike and snare wild rabbits for dinner. If you\u2019re not great at navigation, start with a popular or waymarked trail such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/guides\/all-about-the-offas-dyke-path\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Offas Dyke path<\/a> where there are already an abundance of resources, blogs and guides to learn from. If you\u2019re having a rough day other people are generally very quick to\nhelp. Talking to sheep can also be extremely therapeutic. And restaurants can\nalmost always squeeze one person in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay safe <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst\nthere\u2019s legibly no greater chance of something going wrong \u2013 personally, I tend\nto trip over more often when too busy chatting to others \u2013 there are\npotentially more consequences if something does go wrong when out alone.  Always share your planned routes with friends\nand family and check in at regular intervals so that people can raise the alarm\nin the worst-case scenario. If you\u2019re going off-grid, bringing a tracking\ndevice such as Open Tracking or let family know that you might be out of\ncontact for a few days to reduce any false callouts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope\nthis has inspired you to take your first solo adventure and discover incredible\nplaces all for yourself.
