It\u2019s been great fun, I\u2019ve walked\nfrom Birmingham to Worcester, wild camped on Dartmoor, and cold-water dipped\nalong the English Riviera. If anything, the addition of a train trip to my\nitinerary has added to my sense of adventure. It\u2019s also meant I\u2019ve had more\nexercise because my nearest train station is a 40-minute walk, and a rather\nsteep hill away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Train travel in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have such an extensive train network in the UK, there\u2019s\nno shortage of interesting options for outdoor fun. Y\nBorth is an unassuming place, especially out of season but it has more of\ninterest to outdoor enthusiasts than you might imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nWalk from groyne to groyne along Y Borth\u2019s six\nkilometres of sandy beach<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nDiscover a mysterious petrified forest at low\ntide<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nExplore Ceredigion\u2019s largest sand dunes<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nVisit the Ynyslas Visitor Centre to find out\nwho\u2019s hiding in the dunes<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nSpot fluffy bog cotton at Cors Fochno, Y Borth\u2019s\nhuge peat bog<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nTrain those hill legs along the Wales Coast Path\nto Machynlleth (23 km \u2013 catch the train back)<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7       \nEnjoy cliff top views from the Wales Coast Path\nto Aberystwyth (10 km \u2013 catch the train back)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that level of exploration isn&#8217;t enough for you, the\nCambrian Line has plenty more #GetOutside opportunities to offer. Why not stay\novernight in Y Borth before you explore further? I mean train stations that take you near\nthe start of summit walking routes, like Fort William. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s only a 3 km trot along the West Highland Way from Fort\nWilliam Train Station to the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre. The only area in\nEngland and Wales where you have the legal right to wild camp is currently\nDartmoor. and now there&#8217;s even fewer areas,&nbsp;The good news is that from&nbsp;Okehampton Station you can get you easily up onto the moor and into permitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dartmoor.gov.uk\/about-us\/about-us-maps\/camping-map#:~:text=How%20can%20I%20wild%20camp,follow%20the%20Code%20of%20Conduct%20.\">wild\ncamping areas<\/a>. If you\u2019re walking from Okehampton Station, make sure you\ncheck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dartmoor.gov.uk\/about-us\/about-us-maps\/camping-map#:~:text=How%20can%20I%20wild%20camp,follow%20the%20Code%20of%20Conduct%20.\">MOD\nfiring times<\/a> for the Okehampton Range before you set off. This fits in with the ethos of wild camping. From Windermere Station\non the edge of Windermere, follow the footpaths to Millerground which is a\nwonderful place for a family day out. Walk through a lovely, wooded area before arriving to the shore. At Low Millground there&#8217;s a couple of old boat houses and a jetty, where a rowing boat foot ferry used to cross Windermere over to Belle Grange. Time your stroll for sunset to experience spectacular views out to the mountain peaks in the distance. Pack a poo kit or make sure you go on the train.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobile battery can be important in an emergency. Look for charging points on your train.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Busy trains aren\u2019t always enjoyable. Consider off-peak and book a seat when you can.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you enjoy adventuring with your dog, you\u2019ll be pleased to hear he can travel free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train tickets can be costly.
