Here are 11 ways to spruce up your New Years Day walk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 11 of my favourite ideas to beat the winter blues and transform a boring winter walk into a fun-filled mini-adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-create-a-treasure-hunt\">1. Create a treasure hunt <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Split into two teams \u2013 you can either lay two treasure hunts then swap, or take it in turns to be the question setters. Aim for 5-10 points that each have a clue or a prize hidden at them, and lead the hunters on to the next point. Some could be directions (\u2018Walk due east for 50 paces and find the rock that looks like a bear\u2019), others could be more cryptic (\u2018from little acorns grow\u2026. [answer: oak tree]), or personal (\u2018Search high and low at the place Jamie fell off the swing\u2019). Don\u2019t make it too difficult \u2013 you want the hunters to have fun, not get frustrated! Have a winter picnic <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No need to rush back because everyone\u2019s feeling famished (it\u2019s been at least 20 minutes since your last mince pie!). Pack up some turkey sandwiches or snacks, a flask of hot chocolate, soup or mulled wine, and head out for a winter picnic. If you\u2019ve got some woodland to explore, you could even build a den first, to enjoy your outdoor feast from! Be a human dog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all seen happy hounds bounding after balls and running\nalong trails chasing scents. Well, you don\u2019t need a dog \u2013 or even have to like\ndogs \u2013 to inject some of that joy into your walk. Take turns throwing a tennis\nball for each other \u2013 the others have to run after and \u2018retrieve\u2019 the ball back\nto the thrower. Throw it as high as you can, throw it as far as you can, throw\nit between you with one person playing piggy in the middle\u2026the options are\nendless. You could even have a bag of sweets as \u2018treats\u2019 for the \u2018dogs\u2019 to\nearn! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-go-orienteering\">5. Go orienteering <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishorienteering.org.uk\/pocs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permanent orienteering courses<\/a> (POCs) around the country \u2013 in rural areas as well as in urban parks and green spaces. Head to British Orienteering and use your postcode to find a course near you. Print out or download the free map, and then get hunting for the posts marked around the course. Some are easy, others are fiendish; many are accessible to wheelchair users and people with pushchairs. All you need is a <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.osmaps.com\/outdoor-gear\/equipment\/compasses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compass<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/New_Year_Day_Walk_orienteering.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Orienteering kids&nbsp;\"><\/figure><div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        \n        \n        <p><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"blog-buttons\">\n    <a class=\"btn\" href=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/guides\/beginners-guide-to-orienteering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beginner&#8217;s guide to orienteering  <i class=\"fa fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/a>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-be-the-leader\">6. Be the leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One person closes their eyes, and the other has to guide them along the next stretch of the walk. Carefully! The aim is to do it as well as possible, rather than walk people into trees and lampposts. It\u2019s easiest to get a sense of where your leader is walking by holding on to their elbow or shoulder, rather than their hand. The person following can make an effort to tune in to what their senses are telling them, now they can\u2019t see \u2013 what does the ground feel like under your feet? And what can you hear and smell? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-tree-run-or-walking-race\">7. Tree run or walking race<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Boring walk?! No way! If you\u2019ve got a group of people with different energy levels, set the high energy \u2018tiggers\u2019 a series of challenges to stop them getting bored. They can race between this tree and the next tree and back again; they have to wait behind for 60 seconds as the rest of the group carry on walking, then race to catch up; or everyone can have a walking race. If you break into a run, you\u2019re disqualified! Timing these challenges will make them feel real. If there aren\u2019t enough tiggers to race each other, then set them the challenge that they have to beat their own time. Most tiggers love a competition! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/New_Year_Day_Walk_Tree.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"festive walk\"><\/figure><div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        \n        \n        <p><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-night-walk\">8. Night walk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the most familiar area can feel totally alien in the dark! So make the most of the long nights, grab <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.osmaps.com\/outdoor-gear\/equipment\/lighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">torches or headtorches<\/a> and head out for a night walk. If your group is keen, you could even tell each other ghost stories as you go! Make sure little ones don\u2019t get too scared \u2013 what can help is if they describe what they can see and hear and then together you can work out what it might be \u2013 the light of a street lamp, the call of an owl, or the trickle of a stream.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-collect-bits-for-festive-crafts-and-thank-you-cards\">9. Collect bits for festive crafts and thank you cards <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use your walk as a chance to collect up some craft materials to make thank you cards for all those presents you\u2019ve received! Seed heads, berries, stems, bark and leaves can all make interesting patterns for printing, and if it\u2019s been mild and dry in your area, you could even use leaves to create a collage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"images-with-captions\">\n    <figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/site\/uploads\/images\/2018champs\/Blog%20imagery\/New_Year_Day_Walk_christmas_crafts.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"pine cone girl&nbsp;\"><\/figure><div class=\"image-with-caption\">\n        \n        \n        \n        <p><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"blog-buttons\">\n    <a class=\"btn\" href=\"https:\/\/osmaps.com\/discover\/guides\/%E2%80%8Bhomemade-christmas-decorations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homemade festive crafts  <i class=\"fa fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/a>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-mini-olympics\">10. Mini Olympics <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each member of the group decides on a \u2018sport\u2019. It could be hopping, standing on one leg, balancing on a tree log, speed walking, catching a ball \u2013 whatever is fun and achievable for the people in the \u2018team\u2019. You can have heats, finals and a winner\u2019s trophy (made of twigs and leaves, or another mince pie!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-build-a-sandcastle-or-mud-castle\">11. Build a sandcastle or mud castle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to live near the sea, or wait for summer to have fun building castles. If you\u2019re on the beach, all get involved in building the best fort ever. If you\u2019re not near sand \u2013 have no fear! Embrace the mud and build a fort, with all the towers, banks, ditches and gatehouses you can manage. Winter is the perfect time to mess about and get muddy.
